Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the right to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
